I have been debating: should I go see Mission Impossible 3 or not?
I'm not expecting it to be a great movie. However, I had enjoyed the other 2 for what they were: summer action movies. Which is what I am expecting this one to be too.
I have to admit that I kind of hated how they switch from the team plot to a super-heroesque plot where Tom Cruise's character did everything... or almost everything.
But, really, the thing that bugged me the most was that Tom Cruise is in that movie. I hate the rant that he did against the pharmaceutical industry and antidepressants in general. My big beef with it is that I believe that it stigmatized depression yet once more, as if it needed it. So many people don't seek treatment because they think that it's a sign of weakness to have depression. And so I think that some people saw that rant and thought that a few vitamins will help when, really, they need more. Then again, like my friend Bill (who is a fervent advocate of the evolution) says, "If they are too dumb to follow the advice of an actor instead of a physician, maybe they deserve their fate." I can see some validity to that.
So... I decided to go see the movie because Tom Cruise's moronic and ill-informed views should not keep me from being entertained... plus, there are some other actors that I really really like in that movie. For instance Laurence Fishburne. And Vingh Rhames too.
So we will go see it in matinee. ;o)
And it's utterly ironic that what is going to ultimately be paying for me and my husband's entertainment and what is going to go (at least a few cents) into Mr. Cruise's pockets will be my hard-earned money from my job in the PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY. muhahaha
Comments I had received
From Hadara:
niiiiiice! stick it to em when ya can! I actually decided just recently that I will never see one of his movies ever again. He will never get another dime out of me because of what you have listed in your blog.
From Parvaneh:
Batshit crazy! Love it! Yeah, people like him are dangerous. As if folks dealing with depression don't have enough to process, now some nut job jumping up and down on a couch is going to make them feel even more like failures. Way to go batshit. I'm glad he wasn't around when I was depressed. And Celeste - that is a delicious irony!
From me:
Well... I did go see it. It was good. The best of the 3 movies, imho. At least this time there was a team and, although they played the betrayal angle again (sigh), at least this time it was not from someone from his team. Oh yeah, and the team stays intact too. No one died. Sweet! We don't see the batshit crazy dude as much either, which is good. I was pleasantly surprised to hear so many people tell me that they were like me, wanting to boycott Tom Cruise. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, dude!
