Travels - Originally posted 27 February 2006

Ah, the travels! I travel to the weirdest places sometimes.

I had to travel to a town South-East of Indy this past Saturday to teach some SCA dancing (i.e., medieval/renaissance dances). And that reminded me of different weird travels that I did.

Like we did a demo in a town couple of hours West of Quebec (my hometown). That town was kind of gross. The demo was for a day camp. There were lots of industries around where we were and it broke our hearts to see soot fall on those little kids and them still playing as if nothing was out of the ordinary... because nothing was... It was sad.

We also did a demo in a town that was close (relatively) to where my mother's family lived. There was a festival there called "Le Festival de la Galette de Sarasin", which translates roughly to "The Buckwheat Pancake Festival." Those buckwheat pancakes were like a specialty from that region. Anyway, there, it was completely chaotic for me. A lot of our friends had easier things to do, as they were showcasing their crafts and how to make them. In my case, I had to do an European dance demo (for which I had to coerce friends to do because I did not have enough volunteers), I was in a fashion showcase (where I had to change rapidly between garbs, obviously, as all good fashion shows are), and I had to do some belly dancing. That was the order that it was going... there was little time between each activity. That was waaaaaaaaay crazy. Plus, the friend who was announcing each activity hung around strip clubs a bit too much so whenever he would announce some dancing things, it sounded like the guy who announces the next stripper that is going to take the stage. Man! My husband and I still laugh about it.

Interestingly, as a side note, that time, an older man came to talk to me after my belly dancing portion and said that I had nice hip work. It was a weird statement and my face must have expressed some shock because he immediately added that he was a dance teacher and taught modern dancing and he was amazed that my hips would move like they were. So that was a very nice compliment.

I traveled to so many places (weird or not) that I forget a lot of things that I did! lol

There was a time when we went to an event in Maine and there had been torrential rains so the grounds were basically just mud and there was a friend who is always grumpy about everything but this time she had a big grin on her face and found the whole experience funny. She also explained that she liked to feel mud between her toes. I believe that it was at that same event that my SCA cousin (and real life friend) was fighting all day but all that you could see what his blonde ponytail sticking out of his helmet so when I danced around the campfire with my long blonde hair, people were wondering if I was the same person who fought all day. Hmmm... No, that was my cousin.

I have so many stories! Give me something to drink and I can tell you a whole bunch of 'em. ;op That's something that is reaaaaaaaaally easy when you are part of the SCA: stories just happen to you.

There are multiple times, too, when I went to a place between fields... lately, since I'm in Indiana, it's between 2 cornfields, to be precise.

My latest travel between cornfields was this past Saturday. That was a lot of fun! As I said, I went there to teach SCA dancing. People there were sooooooooo friendly and made it soooooooo amazingly fun! I sure hope that they invite me again. :o) It reminded me of why I love the SCA in the first place! It's because of people like them! For those in the Midwest who might be interested, this amazingly fun (imho) shire is named Cuil Choluim.
